ABOUT ME

Hi! I’m Kyōsui-京萃 (Mika Kobayashi), a Japanese calligrapher from Tokyo. I started practicing calligraphy when I was six years old, and my work has been exhibited at venues such as the National Art Center in Tokyo.
Beyond calligraphy, I’m also passionate about Chado (Japanese tea ceremony), Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), and Kimono - all of which reflect the depth and mindfulness of Japanese culture.
After moving to Berlin in 2022, I noticed a growing curiosity about Japanese traditions. That inspired me to create workshops where I share not only techniques, but also the spirit behind the art. One of the key ideas I explore is “足るを知る” (Taruwoshiru) - a Japanese philosophy that means “to know that you have enough.” It’s a beautiful reminder to embrace simplicity and bring balance and harmony to modern life.
In 2024, I began studying Saga Goryu calligraphy, a 1,200-year-old tradition founded by Emperor Saga in Kyoto. Under the guidance of master calligrapher Suiko Simon, I received the artist name Kyōsui(京萃), and earned the shodan teaching qualification, which allows me to guide others in this classical style.
Through my workshops, I invite people to experience calligraphy not only as writing, but as a meditative and meaningful practice that connects us to ourselves and to the quiet beauty of everyday life.
I’m looking forward to meeting you and exploring these beautiful Japanese traditions together.
